Inverted Nippes - retraction of the nipples

Inverted nipples can be a cause of great distress for many, leading to self-consciousness and, for women, potential breast-feeding problems.

An inverted nipple correction procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic

The nipple ducts are shorter than normal and there is a pulling inward of the nipple.

Retraction of the nipple is caused by a short milk duct system running from the chest wall to the nipple. Although a benign condition, it is often seen as a problem for women wanting to breast-feed.

How much will inverted nipple correction cost?
The cost differs for each individual case.

What happens during the procedure?
Usually performed at a hospital or outpatient clinic, the procedure takes between 1-2 hours.

You may be given a sedative to help you relax, and a local anesthetic. The incision will be made just around the base of the nipple on the areola. The nipple and areola tissue is lifted from the breast and stitched into a new shape. Medicated gauze is then applied to the site..

Are there risks or potential side effects?
As with all surgeries, there is always a possibility of complications, including infection Should infection occur, you would be prescribed a treatment with antibiotics.

Breastfeeding cannot be guaranteed after surgery. Ask your surgeon about all of the risks associated with the procedure before making any decision.

Post-Procedure
post-operative bruising and swelling depends on weither you bruise or swell easily. Keep your head elevated, above the level of your heart, when lying down. Apply cold compresses, or small ice packs to reduce swelling and relieve discomfort. The nipples will be covered with medicated gauze. Under the gauze will be tiny, stitched incisions. As with any surgery, you may feel the after-effects of the anesthetic. If there is heavy bleeding or increased pain, inform your surgeon.

How soon does normal life resume?
Two or three days after the procedure there will be swelling, it eases up over roughly three weeks. Bruising may occur. stitches are usually removed about four days after surgery. You will probably return to work within the week, unless your work involves strenuous activity.
