Male breast reduction
Guide To Cosmetic Surgery
All men have breast tissue and as with women, some men
have more breast tissue than others. In extreme cases of
male breast enlargement, some young adolescents grow the
equivalent of a C cup. Very rarely this can
be due to hormone imbalances, but usually there is no such
abnormality.
Up until quite recent times, breast reduction for a man
consisted of making an incision and cutting the unwanted
breast tissue away. Today, with the advancement of surgical
techniques and the introduction of specifically designed
lipoplasty equipment, the surgeon is able to break up and
draw off excess breast tissue through a fine cannula.
Using lipoplasty techniques, the breast tissue is
approached from a position close to the armpit. Access
is gained through a tiny stab wound, which is difficult
to see after healing. The surgeon is able to draw off the
excess breast tissue under a high vacuum. Only when the
area is flat and normal in appearance, will the operation
come to an end. The surgery is carried out under general
anaesthesia and you will be required to stay in hospital
for one or two days.
Problems following breast reduction for a man are
not common but can occasionally arise. Bruising is a natural
result of the surgery and it may take some months for all
evidence to disappear. Bleeding post-operatively is rare
because of the pressure dressing. Infection is virtually
unknown, but if it did occur it would be necessary for
a course of antibiotics to be taken. Rarely, a further
operation is required to remove tissue which could not
be removed by lipoplasty.
Following male breast reduction surgery, the area may be
lumpy. This is a combination of swelling and fluid collection.
Massage will help the treated area.
You may return to work virtually immediately following
the male breast reduction procedure, but if possible arrange
a week off work.. When returning to work avoid heavy lifting
for about 14 days. Sport, particularly contact sport, should be avoided
for at least one month. This includes swimming.
Gentle exercise, such as walking is recommended.
